Story Behind the Need:

• Business group: The Bank’s Internal Audit Department plays a key role as the Third Line of Defense. The Canadian Banking Audit Group has responsibility for providing independent assurance over the effectiveness of controls for Canadian Banking. The position will provide independent, objective assessment, and evaluation of the effectiveness of internal Business Line controls relating to Real Estate Secured Lending’s Program Enhancements across processes and controls, including policies and procedures, underwriting, regulatory obligations, systems and fraud management. The incumbent will provide high quality, value-added recommendations to management relating to milestone control testing. The incumbent will ensure that department standards are met on all assignments.
• Project: The 2 contractors would be assisting with the day to day operations of this team across ongoing projects. The ideal candidate will have approximately 5-7 years of experience in Real Estate Secured Lending, knowledge of the regulatory framework, and be proficient in data analytics. The incumbent should also have good presentation and report writing skills, display a good balance between technical knowledge (technology) and soft skills.

Typical Day in Role:

• Auditing and Execution:
o Execute assigned audit activities independently as a team member or Officer-in-Charge (OIC).
o Assess the overall effectiveness of governance and management oversight over Real Estate Secured Lending Program Enhancements.
o Assess controls across the First Line of Defense, including regulatory obligations, policies and procedures, underwriting, systems, and fraud management.
o Determine the efficiency, effectiveness, integrity and reliability of internal controls in relation to defined control requirements, employing data analytics to support conclusions, where applicable.
o Execute and manage assigned activities independently in accordance with the Department Standards ensuring audit testing is sufficient and appropriate to support the audit opinion.
o Document all audit work performed to ensure appropriate working papers are maintained and conform to department standards.
• Problem Identification:
o Identify and assess materiality of control weaknesses ensuring facts are gathered and determine the root cause of the problem impact, prepare / review audit findings, as applicable.
• Reporting/Communication:
o Draft audit findings, reports and correspondence to management. Ensure writing is clear, concise and accurate.
o Present and discuss findings and progress with management, as required.
o Follow up on open action items and/or new audit issues raised.
o Develop and maintain good relationships with key auditee and business line management.

Candidate Requirements/Must Have Skills:

• 5+ years in Retail Banking, Audit, Regulatory body, or related experience with a deep understanding of Real Estate Secured Lending products and key regulations/regulatory.
• Knowledge of analytical tools such as Python and experience using PowerBI
• Knowledge of audit processes and methodologies and/or prior change management testing experience

Nice-To-Have Skills:

• Prior Financial Institution Experience

• Proven track record of training / presenting to large stakeholder groups.
• Ability to write clearly and concisely.
• Strong strategic, analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills.
• A self-starter / takes initiative, deals well with ambiguity, is detail oriented.
• Highly organized, ability to work in a dynamic and fast paced environment.
• Strong people skills, including relationship building with clients.

Best vs Average:

• The ideal candidate would be a self starter with a strong analytical mindset.

Degrees or certifications:

• Accounting designations / technical / professional qualifications (CPA, CFA, CIM, etc.), post-graduate degree in business, finance, economics, accountancy, or any other relevant experience (e.g., First Line testing, QAR, Audit, Compliance) would be an asset.
